I had also stayed on boxes or ledges while they swam around me although never had one knock me off and kill itself. I stood on the box also but then ran like hell when the gate opened. I think that's the first time one of them ever died in my game, because I think this somehow smashed the box into itself and it was just gone after that so it seems to have accidentally killed itself XD. After you either run a certain distance away or hide for long enough, they will de-spawn so, not to worry.
